To see Crowded House is a sublime experience at any time but to see them on their first show of a tour in a small 2000 seat venue is just extraordinary, especially given what was to come over the next 2 and a bit hours.
Crowded House decided to have no support band, in fact Neil Finn joked “we decided to be our own support band” for these intimate pop up shows that are running alongside the Red Hot Summer Tour shows they are currently playing.
The support saw the stage moved forward and acoustic instruments brought out including a teeny tiny bass guitar for Nick Seymour. Having seen Crowded House perform many times over the past 30 years audiences have never seen this and quite simply it was mind bogglingly amazing, it felt like sitting in Neil Finn’s loungeroom watching him and the band play and even though this first set was filled with new songs, this made it even more special as the audience was forced to really engage and listen, it was beautiful.
The second set was what you would expect from a band of the stature of Crowded House who have so many songs to choose from and whilst the dancing began early it wasn’t really until half way through the set that the audience decided it was time to dance in front of the stage. Whilst the venue management and the people in the expensive seats may not have liked it, the band certainly seemed too and of course the people dancing at the front of stage did too.
When the dancing began in earnest the written set list went out the window with Neil Finn keeping the carnival atmosphere going by calling out songs to his bandmates.
The rendition of Chocolate Cake was one of the most amazing crowd singalongs I have ever seen which saw the band play past curfew and sadly miss a few of the songs on the set list.
One song sadly missing from the set was Sister Madly but I guess you can’t have it all.
